| Number: 2311 - RR: Portland & Western - Status: Active Location: Toledo, OR - Type: EMD GP39-2 - H.P. 2300 Photo date: 6/2004 - Build Date: 10/1974 Retired: n/a I spotted this active GP39 switching cars near the Georgia Pacific mill, in Toledo, Oregon. | Number: 15 - RR: Cowlitz, Chehalis & Cascade - Status: Active Location: Centralia, WA - Type: Vulcan 45T - H.P. 360 x 2 engines. Photo date: 6/2004 - Build Date: 1942 Retired: n/a Owned by the Chehalis-Centrailia RR Association, this diesel is used as a back up to the steam engine for passenger excursions and as a local switcher to this very small railroad. This loco formerly served the Puget Sound Naval Shipyards in Bremerton, WA. Check out my Chehalis and Centralia RR page. |
| Number: 6135 - RR: VIA (old E&N) - Status: Active Location: Victoria, BC - Type: RDC-1 - H.P. 275 x 2 engines Photo date: 6/2004 - Build Date: 1958 Retired: n/a This and the below locomotive are diesel powered passenger coaches which run daily on the last remaining standard gauge railroad on Vancouver Island, BC. They run on the old E&N railroad, which is now owned by BC Rail, but VIA Rail America, runs these passenger trains. |
| Number: 6148 - RR: VIA (old E&N) - Status: Active Location: Victoria, BC - Type: RDC-1 - H.P. 275 x 2 engines Photo date: 6/2004 - Build Date: 1958 Retired: n/a The second of two powered coaches that run up and down Vancouver Island, BC. Power is via two diesel engines and can be driven from either end of the coach. I have video of this and the above RDC on my RR videos page. |
| Number: 900 - Railroad: Simpson Timber - Status: Active Location: Shelton, WA - Type: EMD SW9 - H.P. 900 Photo date: 4/2004 - Build Date: 1955 - Retired: n/a The first diesel purchased by Simpson it's also currently the oldest logging diesel still serving, while Simpson is the last logging railroad in the U.S. More info and pictures on my Simpson Timber Page. |
| Number: 3002 - Railroad: Portland & Western - Status: Active Location: Chitwood, OR - Type: EMD GP-40-2 - H.P. 3000 Photo date: 4/2004 - Build Date: 1/1967 - Retired: n/a Purchased by the P&W in 4/98, it is one of several GP-40-2 units attached to RP-E4D slug units for the extra traction need to make the Albany to Toledo run. | Number: 4381 - Railroad: Port of Tillamook RR - Status: wrecked Location: Tillamook, OR - Type: EMD GP-9 - H.P. 1750 Photo date: 2003 - Build Date: 1955 - Retired: 1999 This GP-9 was part of a string of locomotives tied up on a hill in 1999. The brakes were not set properly and the trains ran away and derailed. The diesel engine inside was later salvaged and sold to the Brooklyn Roundhouse folks. |

This engine uses two Catipillar V-8 diesels as power. SamTrak was the name of a now defunct Oregon Pacific passenger excursion line along the Willamette River, operational until 2002. | Number: 274 - Railroad: Great Northern - Status: Private owned Location: Porltand, OR - Type: EMD F7A - H.P. 1500 Photo date: 5/2004 - Build Date: 10/1951 - Retired: n/a A freight version of the F7 series. Owned by Doyle McCormic, stored at the Brooklyn Roundhouse. Appears to be in great condition from the outside. This was is an original Great Northern loco # 274B. |
| Number: 190 - Railroad: Doyle McCormic - Status: Private owned Location: Portland, OR - Type: Alco PA-1 - H.P. 1500 Photo date: 5/2004 - Build Date: 1946 - Retired: n/a This is actually a Delaware & Hudson #18, but owner Doyle McCormic chose to paint in the beautiful Nickel Plate Road colors and number it 190. It's now at the Brooklyn Roundhouse under going a full restoration. # 190 also has it's own webpage. This engine was pulled from the ashes of Mexico and brought back here to be restored. |
| Number: 9 - Railroad: Cowichan Valley - Status: Active? Location: Duncan, BC - Type: Whitcomb 65 ton center cab? - H.P. ? Photo date: 6/2004 - Build Date: 1940s - Retired: ? This diesel was located at the shops of the Cowichan Valley RR at the BC Forest Museum. The RR is narrow gauge. This appears to be a standard gauge loco, so I'm not sure if it's actually still used or not. |

This one was spotted several years ago just sitting on a siding. The roster says that it's in storage, while the other unit is active. |

| Number: 989 - Railroad: City of Prineville - Status: Active Location: Oakridge, OR - Type: EMD GP20 - H.P. 2000? Photo date: 7/2004 - Build Date: 11/1954 - Retired: n/a I believe this unit started out life as a GP9 in 1954, but was later converted to a GP20 with a different cab and possibly a more powerful diesel engine. COP aquired it in 1983 from the MILW railroad. I spotted it getting to pull the COP dinner train, which duty it seems to have been regulated too for several years now. | Number: 3771 - Railroad: Port of Tillamook Bay - Status: Active Location: Buxton, OR - Type: GP9E - H.P. 1750 Photo date: 3/2002 - Build Date: 12/1956 - Retired: n/a This unit was spotted on the Buxton siding. It belonged to the SP when it owned the Tillamook branch and transfered to the POTB when they purchased the line in the early 1990s. This unit was rebuilt to GP9E standards in 1974.
