South Africa
New contemporary look for Hilux

Toyota?s ultra successful and popular Hilux has a new contemporary look for 2002. While the fundamental
mechanical design remains the same, drawing on its proven characteristics of low overall running cost and
exceptional reliability and durability, Toyota South Africa has drawn on Toyota?s international styling
basket to enhance the looks of the local Hilux. The result? A smooth new attractive look for this
evergreen favourite light commercial, which makes it look even tougher than before.

In its latest guise the Hilux is significantly revised with an all-new front-end styling package. New fenders,
bonnet, grille, valance and bumpers provide a new fresh look for the Hilux. Raider models feature a new
headlamp and indicator lamp treatment, with sculptured type headlight clusters, as well as a new striping
package. All 4x4 Raider models are fitted with 7JJX15 alloy wheels of a new design, while the new
powered side mirrors on the top of the range 2700i Petrol and 3.0 KZ-TE Diesel 4x4 Double Cab Raider
models have a chrome finish.

The interior styling benefits from an upgrade too. Seat coverings are revised and Raider variants sport
combination leather/cloth seat trim. Double Cab Raider models also have a new centre console. The
instrumentation cluster on all models across the range other than the base line 2-litre short wheelbase
variant is of a new design. The 3.0 KZ-TE diesel 4x4 Double Cab Raider is now fitted with driver?s side
and passenger side airbags to compliment the safety features of the Hilux top of the range derivatives.

The model line-up remains at a total of 16 variants to suit a full range of customer needs. There is one
change however in that the petrol engine Hilux 2700i 4x4 Double Cab SRX is dropped from the range in
favour of a new variant. This new variant is the 3.0 DE 4x4 Double Cab that uses the 5L-E Toyota diesel
engine with electronic injection control.

Buyers can select from a range of models that includes a choice of either short or long wheelbase; 2,0 litre
or 2,7 litre petrol engines; 2,4 or 3,0 litre normally aspirated diesel engines; 3,0 litre turbo diesel, standard
or raised body 4X2 configurations; 4X2 or 4X4; single or double cab options; and basic, Raider, or 4X4
Raider specification levels.

What the range has to offer

As is traditional the Hilux range offers an engine type for a large and varied cross section of applications.
All offer a superb balance between performance and operating economy.

Commercial users who favour petrol engine models will find the efficient 1RZ 2,0 litre engine from Toyota
an exceptional performer in their applications. This engine produces 68 kW @ 4800 r/min with 160 Nm of
torque available at 2800 r/min.

Those who favour diesel power are provided for with a choice of either the 2.4 litre 2L-II engine (61kW @
4200 r/min and 162Nm @ 2400 r/min) or the 5L-E three litre engine with electronically controlled fuel
pump (72kW @ 4200 r/min and 192 Nm @ 2400 r/min).

The Toyota 2700i petrol engine provides smooth and efficient power for those that favour a petrol engine
with a little more power, typically those users in a management category, or recreational users. This
engine produces 108kW @ 4800 r/min with maximum torque of 235Nm @ 4000 r/min.

A jewel in the Hilux engine range is the impressive 1KZ-TE turbocharged diesel engine used in the 4X2
Raised Body Single and Double Cab Raiders, and the 4X4 Double Cab Raider. This engine produces
85kW @ 3600 r/min and a massive 315Nm of torque at just 2000 r/min.

The Hilux range benefits from a high specification level. For instance all models feature a tachometer,
digital clock, intermittent wipe setting for the windscreen wipers, low fuel warning light and cup holders. All
models are fitted with vehicle security systems that fully comply with South African Insurance Association
requirements - i.e. no additional security equipment needs to be fitted for insurance purposes. On the
2,0-litre petrol, 2,4 litre and 3.0D-E diesel models an integral gear lock provides anti theft protection in
tandem with a remote alarm immobiliser system. On the 2700I and the 3.0KZ-TE turbo diesel models a
transponder key immobiliser system complements the intrusion alarm for comprehensive anti-theft

The range starts with the baseline 2,0 litre short wheelbase single cab model (DLX specification). This and
the 2400D are the only short wheelbase variants in the range. Two long wheelbase 4X2 single cab 2,0 litre
models are offered with a choice of basic (DLX) or SR specifications. The 2700i Raider Single Cab Raised
Body and the 2700i Raider Double Cab Raised Body, and the 3-litre 1KZ-TE turbo diesel Hilux Raider
model complete the 4X2 line-up.

At the SR specification a tubular steel rear bumper and sliding rear window are added to the basic
specification. At this level cloth seat facings are available as an option on both the 2000 and 2400D
models. On the Hilux 2000 Long Wheelbase the cloth trim option is matched to cut pile carpets.

All Single Cab 2700i and 3-liter diesel 4X2 models are of the Raised Body specification. Power steering is
fitted to all models from this level up. All 4X2 Single Cab Raider models and the 2700i Single Cab 4X4
Raider are fitted with an air conditioner, RDS radio with front loading CD player, a sliding rear window,
bush bar, side steps, body colour over fenders, tubular steel rear bumper, roll bar, elasticised tonneau
cover and cloth seats with leather bolsters. An electro-pneumatic diff-lock is specified as standard
equipment on the 2700i 4X2 Raider and the 3.0KZ-TE 4X2 Raider. On the 4X4 Double Cab Raiders this
item is computer controlled. Electrically operated windows are standard on the 2700i 4X2 Raider.

Five Double Cab models are offered in the range to meet a variety of needs. The base line Double Cab is
the 3.0D-E 4x4 Double Cab DLX. Features include front loading CD/ Radio and four speakers, sliding
rear window; bucket seats at the front covered with cloth and tubular steel rear bumper. A diff lock to
improve traction in difficult terrain is also fitted as standard.

From the 2700i 4x2 (Raised body) Double Cab Raider upwards features include air conditioner, power
steering, remote central locking with selective unlock, radio/CD with RDS and four speakers, power
windows front and rear, sliding rear window, bucket seats at the front covered with combination
velour/leather upholstery, height adjustable head restraints for the front seats and integral head restraints
(2) for the rear seat, remote fuel filler release, and tubular steel rear bumper. A diff lock to improve
traction in difficult terrain is also fitted as standard.

The top-of-the-range 2700i and 3.0KZ-TE turbo diesel 4x4 Double Cab Raiders feature the following
additional equipment: Computer controlled rear diff lock; ABS brakes, driver and front passenger airbags,
front loading CD/ Radio, electric windows, remote controlled central locking with selective lock & unlock.
