TOYOTA HILUX ENGINES
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Hilux 4X4 to Americans are the available engines.   After all,
The suspension found in the Hilux can be found in at least some older American Toyota trucks.  Both the
solid front axle and the torsion bar IFS suspension.   But what can't be found are many of the available
engines.  While two diesel engines were available in the U.S. from the early to the mid 1980s, the 2L and
the 2TL turbo version, both of these engines are quite rare and go for a premium, even in poor condition.
However, the 2nd generation Toyota diesel engines, were never were available in the U.S. and are
something to behold.  Powerful and fuel efficient, they are the envy of many American 4 wheelers.   But in
many other countries, including some of the most remote places on earth, they are a dime a dozen.
Compiling information on the foreign Toyota engines is difficult at best.  I've tried to present the information in the
most accurate format that I could.  However, some information may turn out to be inaccurate.  If any corrections are needed, please do not hesitate to

The following excerp was copied from the Toyota European website, describing the new D4-D
technology in the various Toyota diesel motors, including the Hilux 2.5 liter 2KD-FTV

D-4D direct-injection common rail diesel engine

This modern technology makes use of a high-pressure pump, a common rail, and computer-controlled injectors to deliver
exactly the right amount of fuel to each cylinder, at precisely the right timing. It is this exact timing and fuel
measurement that leads to better combustion, cleaner burning and lower emissions of harmful substances such as soot
(meeting European Step III exhaust gas regulations). And it is common rail injection that ensures D-4D engines deliver
the optimum in power and torque throughout the range of rpm, for better driving performance and comfort.

Fuel in the D-4D is pressurised to an extremely high 135mpa within the "common rail" that feeds all four cylinders (older
diesel engines have a separate pipe leading from the pump to each cylinder). The high pressure injection creates better
fuel atomisation for complete burning and increased power output. And because there is less fuel wasted though inefficient
combustion, the D-4D delivers better fuel economy too.

In addition the computer control unit injects a small amount of fuel into the cylinder just before the main fuel load ignites.
This "pilot burn" lowers the explosive force of the main combustion process and goes a long way to reduce the noise and
vibration formerly associated with diesel engines. This all goes to make it one of the silkiest diesels ever built.

The all-new D-4D diesel engine can now be test driven on the following cars: Yaris, Yaris Verso, Corolla, Corolla Verso,
Land Cruiser 90, Hilux.
Years of production:  1985 through current

Common Rail, Direct Injection, Diesel Engine, DOHC 16 Valves, Turbo.

The latest development in the technology which is far better than the ordinary direct injection. The direct injection engine
under the code name " 2KD-FTV " with 2494 cc capacity, generates a peak power of 75 kw at 3,600 rpm, a maximum
torque of 260 newton-meter at 1,600-2,400 rpm. for the 4-wheel drive version.
For the 2-wheel drive version, the peak power is 75 kw at 3,800 rpm, a maximum torque of 1,400-3,200 newton-meter at
1,400-3,200 rpm.

"2KD-FTV The Most Economical One". The common rail fuel injection produces ultra high pressure which is 8 times
more than the pressure of the normal fuel injection system. It can inject much finer fuel mist. This, when combined with
32 bit ECU which controls fuel quantity, valve-timing, and accurate pressure at different engine revolutions., result in the
most fuel economy. It is 21% more economical than the old version. We dare to challenge that our pick-up trucks are
more fuel economy than others.

"2KD-FTV The Most Powerful One". With the 16-valve, double overhead camshaft engine technology, which formerly was
available in saloon or sports cars only, and with power from the turbo-charger coupled with the genius design., the D4D
engine produces maximum torque at a much wider range of speed. This results in the full utilization of power, whether it
is during taking off or during taking over, without having to drag the engine revolution to the maximum.

The Pilot Injection System helps smooth engine running like sitting in saloon cars. The noise level is only 49 decibels at
the idle speed. The Pilot Injection System produces fuel injection in advance before the main injection starts working,
reducing Ignition Lag Time and resulting in continuous and complete combustion. Noise from ignition is also reduced.
